A weekend of itinerant panoramic hikes on the Via Alpina. Highlights: Engstlenalp with its idyllic lake, nostalgic mountain hotel and alpine rhododendrons; the Horizon Trail ridge walk with wonderful views of the Bernese Alps; and endless meadows of early-summer wildflowers. Guided by David Erard.

Hikes at level 3*/4*, for enthusiastic hikers on good form. Technical level: T2 (Swiss Alpine Club grading) with some sections at T3. Need to carry rucksack with clothes, picnics and overnight kit for the 2 days.

  • Friday 7 August: meet in the evening in Engelberg
  • Saturday 8 August: Engelberg – Jochpass, 2222 m– Engstlenalp; c. 1300 m ↑, 450 m ↓, 5h45.
  • Sunday 9 August: Engstlenalp – Tannalp – Balmeregghoren – Bidmi (then Meiringen); c. 750 m ↑, 1150 m ↓, 6 h15.

Cost per person: CHF 530 (min. 6, max. 10 participants) including two days of guided hiking +  two overnight stays in twin rooms (half-board). www.baer-post.ch and www.hotel-steinmattli.ch. Price excludes: transport, insurances, dinner on first night, lunches, drinks.
