Historic Walser route, Grisons, Part 4

FULLY BOOKED! A long-distance historic trail in the footsteps of the Walser people in the high valleys of the Grisons: 20 one-day sections spread over four summers! In 2022 we take five days to hike the final section, from Langwies to St Antönien, discovering en route the culture and fascinating history of the Walser folk.

Highlights

Typical Walser settlements with wooden houses, barns and shingle roofing; the spectacular karst landscape around Rätschenjoch; the scenic Grünsee and protected alpine moorland near Durannapass; and varied trails taking us through species-rich alpine meadows, forests, and wide valleys.

Type of hiking

  • 5 days of guided hikes, with discovery of the local flora and fauna, geology, history and culture.
  • Hikes at level 3*/4*, for experienced, sure-footed walkers on good form and not suffering from vertigo ; up to 1100 m ↑ and 1350 m ↓ and 5.5–6.5 hours of walking each day (excluding shorter first day), plus need to carry rucksack with clothes, picnics and overnight kit for 4 of the 5 days.
  • Technical level: mostly T2 (Swiss Alpine Club grading) with some sections at T3.
  • Overnight stays with half-board in twin rooms.

  • Thursday 28 July (meet Langwies at 12.00): Langwies 1318 m – Blackten Stafel – Skihaus Casanna 1944 m; c. 690 m ↑, 60 m ↓, 2h45 (+ optional extra, Blakter Flua, 420 m ↑↓ if time and weather permit)
  • Friday 29 July: Skihaus Casanna 1944 m – Durannapass 2116 m – Casannapass 2232 m – Serneuser Schwendi – Klosters Dorf 1131 m; c. 530 m ↑, 1350 m ↓, 6h30.
  • Saturday 30 July: Klosters Dorf 1131 m – Zügenhüttli 2062 m  – Schlappin 1658 m – Klosters Dorf 1131 m; c. 1050 m ↑and ↓, 6h15.
  • Sunday 31 July: Klosters-Madrisa 1884 m – Rätschenjoch 2601 m – Sunnistafel 1748 m – St Antönien 1418 m; c. 780 m ↑, 1250 m ↓, 6h (+ optional peak Rätschenhorn 140 m ↑↓)
  • Monday 1 August: St Antönien 1418 m – Partnunstafel 1762 m – Carschinahütte 2229 m – Bärgli 2134 m (bus back down); c. 1000 m ↑, 300 m ↓, 5 h.

Itinerary may be modified to take account of local weather conditions or for the security of the group.

Price and booking

CHF 875 per person (min. 6, max. 8 participants), including: 5 days’ guided hikes; 4 nights’ accommodation with half-board in twin rooms (3 nights with private bathrooms). Please allow an extra 10–20 francs (with ½-price or general abonnement) for the use of mountain lifts and buses.

Price excludes: transport, insurances, picnic lunches, drinks.
